Using Articles To Identify Your Development Niche

Writing articles and submitting them to article directories is one of the more accepted and useful ways of getting the word out about your website. It establishes your presence on the web and will usually provide a link back to your own site. Writing articles is most often used later in web development, after an idea has progressed from buying a domain name and putting content on a site. But, what about after you’ve developed your site and are looking for other web development projects.

Sometimes it’s hard to identify what niche you’d like to fill on the Internet, and what subject you would be able to provide a significant amount of information about. If other brainstorming efforts have not spurred you on to action, try this one.

Start with a piece of paper in front of you and list out the titles of articles you feel you are able to write about, don’t stop until you have at least ten titles listed. Don’t limit yourself by trying to make up article titles specific to one industry or idea, just let it flow and write article ideas for what you know and what your writing ability will allow you to produce. The idea is to pick your brain for things you know a good deal of information about, but they may also be ideas you would’ve never thought of making a website about.

I’ll do this right now to illustrate the point. I will proceed to write down the first ten article ideas I think of.

There’s my ten article names. From this list we can see that three titles are camping/outdoors titles, “Family Camping On A Budget”, Getting Your Kids Interested In The Outdoors”, and “Easy Camping Meals”. Could there be a camping website in me that I would’ve never considered doing? Or maybe I can narrow it down a bit further, since two of the three titles involved mention family and kids I could make it a “family camping” site or a “camping with kids” site. That’s not a bad narrowed down niche.

With the overall site theme of “camping with kids”, I could then include a few different sections made up of the three original article ideas. A camping on a budget section, a getting your kids interested in the outdoors section, and an easy camping meals section. Each of these sections could also further be developed making it quite an extensive site with quite a bit to offer the viewer.

By brainstorming what most consider a later stage of web development, article writing, early in the process you can stumble upon a subject area you know about and could develop that may have never come to your attention via the normal thinking process. And, after all, most web success has been by people who have avoided the “normal thinking process”.
